Dramatic game at the Emirates: Man United hand Arsenal their second Premier League defeat
With momentum from a 2-0 win over Manchester City in the previous round, Michael Carrick and his players arrived at the Emirates aiming for a positive result, particularly after top-four rivals Liverpool were beaten by Bournemouth on Saturday.
As predicted, Arsenal came out aggressively and took control of the midfield during the first 30 minutes of the half, thanks to the flexibility and movement of Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard and Zubimendi.
Manchester United eventually cracked under the sustained pressure when Lisandro Martínez turned the ball into his own net in the 29th minute. The ball unfortunately clipped the Brazilian defender’s heel before flying past the goalkeeper, following a shot from Ødegaard and additional pressure from Timber.
After conceding, Manchester United regained possession and created several clear chances of their own, including Bruno Fernandes going one-on-one with David Raya, only for William Saliba to react quicker and produce a perfectly timed tackle.
The turning point came when Zubimendi played a misplaced pass right in front of his own goal. Bryan Mbeumo pounced on the mistake, calmly slotting the ball beyond David Raya’s reach to equalise for Manchester United in the 37th minute.
Back after the interval, Manchester United wasted little time in taking the lead. Patrick Dorgu produced a magnificent volley from outside the box, with the ball crashing off the crossbar and into the net despite a full-stretch dive from David Raya. The Red Devils went 2–1 up in the 51st minute.
In an effort to regain the advantage, Mikel Arteta made four consecutive substitutions, with Mikel Merino, Eze, Ben White and Viktor Gyökeres coming on for Martin Ødegaard, Zubimendi, Hincapié and Gabriel Jesus respectively.
From a corner in the 84th minute, substitute Mikel Merino grabbed the equaliser for Arsenal amid a goalmouth scramble in front of the Manchester United net, reigniting hope for the Gunners.
However, just moments later, Matheus Cunha - who had replaced Bryan Mbeumo - curled a superb effort into the far corner to restore Manchester United’s advantage, making it 3-2 in the 86th minute.
Despite seven minutes of added time, Arsenal could not find a breakthrough as Manchester United goalkeeper Lammens impressed, sealing a 3–2 final score.
Leaving the Emirates with all three points, Manchester United climbed into fourth place, overtaking Liverpool after the Merseyside club’s defeat to Bournemouth, while Arsenal saw their gap to league leaders Manchester City reduced to just four points following Pep Guardiola’s side’s 2-0 win over Wolves at the Etihad on Saturday.
