Top 5 potential next jobs for Xabi Alonso following his Real Madrid departure
Regardless of how his tenure with Los Blancos played out, Alonso is expected to be among the leading candidates for several clubs in the months ahead. Below are top 5 teams that could offer the 44-year-old the next step in his managerial journey.
Tottenham Hotspur
In recent games, the London side have failed to meet expectations under Thomas Frank’s management. They have suffered more defeats than victories, putting him under considerable pressure.
Xabi Alonso is a prominent candidate to step into the hot seat, replacing Thomas Frank. His ability was proven during his time in Germany.
However, an Alonso move to Spurs remains difficult to imagine at this stage, with the club currently not operating at the same level as some of the other sides that could target him.
Paris Saint-Germain
Their head coach Luis Enrique has yet to renew his contract, which runs until the summer of 2027, and reports suggest he could be tempted by the prospect of a new challenge.
Alonso would fit the profile of the type of manager PSG might look to appoint but the idea of Enrique leaving the club this summer still seems unlikely.
Manchester United
Michael Carrick has been appointed as the club’s interim head coach following the departure of Ruben Amorim. However, United’s hierarchy remain in search of a permanent manager, who is likely to be appointed in the summer.
The chance to rebuild from the ground up and awaken a sleeping giant would be a tempting challenge for Xabi Alonso.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich targeted Alonso after his invincible 2023–24 season with Leverkusen, parting ways with Thomas Tuchel that summer before ultimately appointing Vincent Kompany.
Bayern Munich are among the European giants monitoring his situation, with Alonso a proven Bundesliga coach whose style is well suited to the demands of German football.
However, Bayern do not appear to be in the market for a new manager at present, with Kompany having taken another step forward in his second season in charge.
Liverpool
Liverpool appear to be the most likely destination for Alonso’s next managerial role, with a host of factors making Anfield the standout option.
Arne Slot has struggled to deliver results in his second season in charge and remains under intense pressure to turn things around, with his job now in serious jeopardy.
With Alonso now available, Liverpool could revive their interest should their struggles under Slot continue.
